How AI search works — and how buuuzi helps
Why AI assistants name some brands and skip others — crawlers, sources and citations — and where buuuzi fits into the whole optimization cycle.
More and more people ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude instead of searching Google. They type a question, read one answer, and act on it. If the assistant names your competitor and not you, you have lost that customer before they ever visited a website.
This guide explains, in plain terms, how those answers are built — and how buuuzi helps you become the brand the AI names.
How an AI answer is built
Two things happen when someone asks an assistant a question:
- Reading the web ahead of time. AI companies run crawlers — GPTBot (OpenAI), ClaudeBot (Anthropic), PerplexityBot, Google-Extended — that visit pages and store what they find. This is a lot like the Google crawler, but the goal is different: not to rank pages, but to understand them well enough to talk about them.
- Answering in the moment. When a question comes in, the assistant pulls the most relevant sources it knows about and writes a short answer in its own words. Some assistants (Perplexity, Gemini) also show numbered citations — the sites they leaned on.
So being "visible" to AI is not about ranking #1. It is about being a source the assistant can find, read, trust, and quote.
Why some brands get named and others do not
The assistant reaches for sources that are easy to understand and safe to rely on. In practice that means:
- Pages it is allowed to read (crawlers are not blocked).
- Content it can parse — real text in the HTML, clear structure, plain descriptions of what you do.
- Signals that you are real and trustworthy — an About page, contacts, consistent profiles on authoritative platforms.
- Being cited by other sites the AI already trusts.
When those are missing, the AI simply has less reason to mention you — and names someone else.
GEO and AEO — the new optimization
This is why a new discipline appeared: GEO / AEO (Generative / Answer Engine Optimization) — optimizing to be the answer, not just to rank on a results page. It is young, which is the opportunity: the brands that start now get named while competitors are still thinking about SEO.
Where buuuzi fits — the whole cycle
buuuzi covers every side of this, and — just as important — lets you measure whether what you did actually worked:
- Measure — buuuzi asks the four assistants real questions from your niche and records how often they mention you. That is the AI Mentions feature and your headline number, Visibility Rate.
- Diagnose your site — the AI Readiness audit scores your site 0–100 across 14 technical checks (crawler access, llms.txt, structured data, and more) with fixes.
- Act — Get Cited turns the data into a plan: where to get mentioned and where competitors are beating you.
- Track — Analytics shows your visibility over time, so every change you make is proven by a number, not a guess.
That is the core idea: buuuzi covers the full optimization cycle and tracks the results of everything you do.
